Giro d'Italia 2026 stage 16 results: Jonas Vingegaard serves up masterclass for fourth stage win

Afonso Eulálio, Ben O'Connor and Giulio Pellizzari all lose time on Carì summit finish

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) dominated stage 16 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia to take his fourth stage win – his first in the maglia rosa in Carì, Switzerland. Like the three other summit finishes – all won by the Dane – Visma-Lease a Bike set an infernal pace, and Vingegaard's class proved too much when he attacked with 6.7 kilometres to go.

However, unlike on the three previous mountain-top finishes, Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) was not alone as the 'best of the rest', and instead won the sprint for second from a chase group ahead of Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Thymen Arensman (Netcompany Ineos) and Derek Gee (Lidl-Trek).

The final climb to Carì proved decisive for many inside the top 10. Despite Hindley moving up to fourth, it wasn't all positive for Red Bull, who deciding to ramp up the initial pace on the final climb, only for the first victim being their young Italian Giulio Pellizzari, who shipped a lot of time and surrendered his sixth-place position.

Other key riders dropped early on were second-place Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) and Ben O'Connor (Jayco-AlUla), who appeared to suffer in the heat. Eulálio's loss is Gall and Arensman's gain who move up to second and third respectively.
