As anticipated Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) made another statement at the 2026 Giro d'Italia, dominating the first Alpine stage of the race to move into the pink jersey.
Vingegaard attacked inside the final 5km of the climb to Pila, with Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) again the best of the rest, finishing 49 seconds back. Next across the line was Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), ahead of Vingegaard's teammate Davide Piganzoli and Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).
Maglia rosa Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) battled hard to defend the jersey, but he will have to settle for holding onto a podium spot in the general classification, after finishing 2:49 behind Vingegaard on the day.
Vingegaard and Piganzoli weren't the only Visma riders to impressive as the team controlled the stage all day, keeping the gap to a talented group of climbers in the breakaway, which included the likes of Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Einer Rubio (Movistar) and Wout Poels (Unibet Rose Rockets).
